Creative Time: The Book was released in celebration of Creative Time’s 33rd anniversary. With the help of our Urban Visual Recording Machine, we visualized the sights and sounds of New York City, from Times Square to Coney Island. The UVRM, a modified commercial van, recorded current time, location, weather conditions (wind speed and direction, temperature, and humidity), prevalent surrounding color, ambient sound, and people’s voices. The data was processed in real-time, then printed inside the machine every thirty seconds over seven days. These physical, visual recordings were then used as the book’s cover tip-ins, creating thousands of unique, original covers for the book’s first run. It quickly sold out.
